3 Tips To Fight Cystic Acne

Posted on

Cystic acne, unlike simple whiteheads and blackheads, can present unique challenges. The acne is much larger and can often result in permanent scarring. Although cystic acne usually requires medical treatment, there are some at-home strategies you can use to prevent making your acne worse.

Be Vigilant About Sanitation

Cystic acne has many underlying causes, such as hormones, but you must be stringent about your aseptic techniques when handling your face. Be mindful about the placement of your hands. You probably inadvertently rest your face on your hands or even touch your acne. This introduces new bacteria to your face, which can exacerbate current problems. Make sure any cleansing products or tools you use for your face are clean.

Avoid using washcloths or any reusable products on your face if they have not been thoroughly sanitized between uses. Consider switching to strong paper towels when you wash or dry your face. When using a face brush, use versions with antimicrobial properties or spray rubbing alcohol on your brush after use. If you wear makeup, you need to wash your makeup brushes after each use or use disposable makeup sponges to apply your makeup.

Scale Back On Face Washing

When you have a problem with acne, it can be tempting to wash your face more often. The frequent friction on your face can contribute to entrapment of dead skin and may force bacteria further inside your pores. Limit your face washing to a light cleansing in the morning and be slightly more thorough before bed. If you do not wear makeup, cleansing your face at night is sufficient. Use medicated cleansers and be careful when washing your face. You do not want to rupture active cysts, which can spread infections. Only exfoliate areas that do not have active breakouts.

Use Barriers For Makeup

If you wear makeup, this can further contribute to cystic acne. Find ways to create a barrier between your skin and your makeup to minimize the amount of makeup that can become trapped in your pores. Look for acne-fighting moisturizers or primers. These products usually contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Since you likely wear products under your foundation, make sure they work to help fight acne. After you apply any medicated products, allow the product to sit on your skin for a few minutes before applying your makeup. This gives the product a chance to penetrate your skin and set to form a barrier.

When you have severe acne problems, you may find it is easy to exacerbate breakouts. A meticulous skin care routine can prevent exacerbation of acne and help dermatological treatments work better.
